The responsibility of German education system basically lies with “Bundeslander” states while federal government plays only minor role. Optional “Kindergarten” nursery school education is provided for all children between 3-6 years of age after which school attendance is essential in various cases for 11 to 12 years. This system varies in whole Germany because each Bundesland decides its own educational policies. In comparison secondary education includes four types of schools like:

The Gymnasium is arranged to prepare students for university education and finishes with final examination “Abitur” after grade 12 or 13.

The Realschule has widespread emphasis for intermediate learners and finishes with final examination “Mittlere Reife” after grade 10.

The Hauptschule prepares students for vocational education and finishes with final examination “Hauptschulabschluss” after grade 9 or 10 and “Realschulabschluss” after grade 10.

There are two types of grade 10, one is for higher level known as type 10b and 10a is known as lower level. Only higher level type 10b can lead to “Realschule” and this finishes with final examination “Mittlere Reife” after grade 10b.

Fachhochschulen

Fachhochschulen are institutions which facilitate students with practical training on academic or artistic basis. Degree programs and teachings in these institutions are strongly oriented fronting vocational studies and practical requirements of working life. Fachhochschulen advance short courses particularly in engineering disciplines, in business administration, social work and creative arts.

College of Art and Music

Another string of higher education establishments is “Kunst-und Musikhochschulen” which as well as corresponding subject areas in universities and “Gesamthochschulen” provide training in fine arts, performing arts and also in music subjects.

Linguistic Ability

German is the language of instruction in all kind of study programs for lectures, classes and seminars. You will be required to pass a German language test to get admission in higher education institutions. There are various language courses available in German cultural institution including summer holiday courses, pre-study courses and courses accompanying regular study.

Accommodation

There are halls for residence but various German and foreign students have to find their own accommodation. You must go to Germany in advance before beginning of semester to arrange a place to live for you. Beforehand you may have to stay in a youth hostel, boarding house or other standard accommodations until better housing is found. The “Akademische AuslandsSmter, Studentenwerke” and other university services will provide you assistance.

Scholarships

German Academic Exchange Service “DAAD” offers scholarships for study and research in Germany and supplies information on “higher education” in Germany. Publications available from DAAD include:

Studying in Germany “Information for Foreign Students on University”

Postgraduate Courses in “Federal Republic of Germany” and

Scholarships and Funding for Study and Research in Germany for “British Academic Staff, Research and Students”.
