Education in Slovakia consists of a free education system. It is based on 10 years of compulsory school attendance. Several schools particularly universities are owned by state, though since 1990s there are also church-owned and private schools. Students go to school for five days and a week from Monday until Friday. Saturday’s holiday were announced before 1980s. Summer break is from 1st of July until the end of August and at universities also in June, a week around Christmas and Easter in spring and on official holidays. A school year consists of two semesters. The first semester ends at the end of January in all schools, the second one end before beginning of summer holidays. Primary and secondary school students typically have around 6 classes in a day. Classes last for 45 minutes and there is also a so called “big break”. The state financed education and all textbooks as well as instruction materials below university level are free. It should be returned at the end of semester.

There are also private schools in Slovakia which are paid. There are also several best universities and colleges in Slovakia.

There are also further five independent higher education institutions which don’t have university status. The oldest university in Scotland is University of St Andrews, established in 1413 with the universities of Glasgow and Aberdeen. These “ancient universities” were established by papal bulls but in 16th century royal charter became standard method of foundation. University of Edinburgh was established first which became Scotland’s fourth university at a time when Scotland’s more crowded neighbor England had only two. The number of universities doubled during 1960s with three existing colleges gaining university status and the University of Stirling being established as Scotland’s only “plate glass university”.

Various former polytechnics or central institutions followed in 1990s after Further and Higher Education Act 1192. The newest Queen Margaret University attained university status in 2007. Beside campus based universities, the distance learning Open University plays an important role in Scottish university sector. It is teaching 40% of Scotland’s part-time undergraduates.

The University of Dublin (Ollscoil Atha Cliath in Irish), corporately nominated the Chancellor, Doctors and Masters of University of Dublin (since the 19th century). It is located in Dublin Ireland. It was found 1592 when “Queen Elizabeth I” issued a charter for Trinity College Dublin, as “The mother of university”. This date makes it Ireland’s oldest operating university. Contrasting from universities of Oxford and Cambridge, after which University of Dublin was modeled and both of which comprise several constituent colleges, there is just one Dublin College named as Trinity College. Hence the designations “Trinity College Dublin” and “University of Dublin” as usual are synonymous for practical purposes. The University of Dublin is a member of Irish University Association and Coimbra Group, a network of leading European universities.

The university is governed by University Senate, chaired by Chancellor or a Pro-Chancellor in their place. The Senate was constituted by Letters Patent of 1857 as a body corporate under name, style and title of “The Chancellor, Doctors and Masters of University of Dublin”, empowered by statements like “The Chancellor, Doctors, and Masters of the University of Dublin”, empowered by statements such as “It shall be and shall continue to be a body corporate with a common seal, and shall have power under the said seal to do all such acts as may be lawful for it to do in conformity with the laws and statutes of the State and with the Charters and Statutes of the College. It shall consist of the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellors, and such Doctors and Masters of the University as shall be members of the Senate in accordance with such regulations and conditions as the Board shall enact.”

The “Board in above case yet is governing authority of Trinity College, so it would seem the University has also some degree of subsidiarity to the Board of College but this is countered by role of visitors below. Each meeting of Senate is leaded by a “Caput” consist of Chancellor, the Provost of Trinity College or Vice-Provost in their place and Senior Master Non-Regent. The University of Dublin is today in very centre of Dublin, as city has moved eastwards. Its campus contains various buildings of architectural merit, especially from 18th and 19th centuries. These include Chapel and Examination Hall designed by Sir William Chambers and Museum Building designed by Irish architecture Thomas Newenham Deane and Benjamin Woodward.

Degrees

Graduate of liberal degrees like non-professional like as Humanities or Science, receive an honours Bachelor of Arts degree after four years, but some students receive an ordinary B.A after three years study. Bachelors of at least three years standing might proceed to the degree of Master of Arts.

From 1975 onwards, University of Dublin degrees were also awarded to graduates at the colleges of Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). This practice continued until 1998 when DIT gained ability to award degrees in its own right.

Source of Funds for Colleges and Universities

American Universities

Students enrolling in American Universities have right of entry to thousands of private and public institution from Atlantic to Pacific. Public universities like University of Wisconsin and UC-Berkeley receive state and federal aid. Students need to pay only tuition fees for public education. Private colleges like Harvard, Yale and Stanford charge higher tuition rates to account for the absence of public funding.

European Universities

In contrast, European universities are mostly public and entail low tuition payments from students. The reason of higher esteem of private institution is their pledge to higher education as an immutable right. Some universities are funded through income taxes, schools in France and Germany have adopted student fees in last five years to account for budget shortfalls.

Institutional History

American Universities

Relative youth of United States as a nation means that its universities are moderately new. Harvard University opened its access in 1636 but several public universities west of Appalachians opened following War in 1812. Several systems like University of Wisconsin system, stated out as land grant colleges designed to help farmers understand vagaries of their trade.

European Universities

Role of Europe as a leader of higher education began in 1036 with opening of University of Bologna. Higher education tradition in Europe is practically a millennium old but universities retain plenty of higher historic charm. Older buildings are used as museums, lecture halls and offices at universities from London to Rome. Public funding designated to historic preservation is one reason to keep these buildings around.

Admission Requirements

American Universities

High school students of United States dread process of applying to colleges and universities. This process includes assembly of recommendation letters, creating resume and writing personal essays to prepare for life after graduation. American university requires primary qualifications for freshman is decent SAT or ACT scores, a high school diploma and a list of extracurricular activities.

European Universities

European students are put through grater sifts as compared to American students before reaching university level. The British A-level tests like require students interested in local universities to take extensive testing on four subjects. These tests isolate committed students from young professionals who might not work well in university system. The areas of focus from A-levels help students to narrow down their choices at university, a severe difference from soul searching required to choose a major in American schools.

Campus Life

American Universities

American universities are designed to welcome students and encourage on campus activities throughout year. Student union is centerpiece of American university campus which serves as cafeteria, grocery store, entertainment venue and information centre. Several schools have residence halls and apartments to keep students close to their classes without spending a fortune on rent.

European Universities

Typical European university is designed exclusively for study. Several European universities are devoid of extensive student hosting found throughout United States. European campuses contain lecture halls, laboratories and libraries due to spatial constraints of major cities. Various schools will help local and international students find accommodations before their classes commence.

Delft University of Technology also known as TU Delft, is largest and oldest Dutch public technical university located in Delft, Netherlands. It has eight faculties and assorted research institutes. It hosts over 15,000 students both undergraduates and postgraduates, more than 2,600 scientists as well as more than 200 professors, over 1,800 doctoral students and more than 2,000 people in support and management staff. Delft University was established on January 8, 1852 by King William II of Netherlands as a Royal Academy, with main purpose of training civil servants for colonies of Dutch East India Company. School swiftly expanded its research and educational curriculum. It was becoming first Polytechnic School in 1864 and institute of technology in 1905.

It finally gained full university rights in 1986. During its existence several prominent engineers and scientists were either affiliated with or educated at TU Delft, including Nobel laureates Jacobus van ’t Hoff, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes and Simon Van der Meer. TU Delft is a member of several universities federations including IDEA League, CESAER, UNITECH and 3TU. It ranks amongst top universities in world in the field of technology.

Campuses

Primarily all university buildings were located in historic city centre of Delft. This changed in second half of 20th century with relocations to separate university neighborhood. The last university building in historic centre was University Library, which was relocated to a new building in 1997. On 12th of September 2006 Mekelpark design was officially permitted, giving a green light to alteration of area around Mekelweg (the main road on university terrain) into a new campus heart: the Mekelpark. The new park will replaced main access road and transmit car traffic around campus. Its newly created park is a safer place for bicycles and pedestrians. The project has since been completed.

Library

The TU Delft Library is hub of knowledge for technical and scientific information in Netherlands. The building was designed by Mecanoo architecten, an prominent office located in Delft. The university library not only offers space for books but it also offers space for knowledge and research. It is a meeting place to exchange different ideas.

Faculties

The Delft University of Technology encompasses eight faculties

3mE; Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

BK; Architecture

CiTG; Civil Engineering and Geosciences

EWI; Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

IO; Industrial Design Engineering

LR; Aerospace Engineering

TBM; Technology, Policy and Management

TNW; Applied Sciences
